Spray Vs. Pills
Sleep Medications - Aren’t they all the same?
There is a very wide variety of sleeping potions and pills that fall under the general term ‘sleep medication’. The effectiveness of prescription, OTC and natural sleep aid remedies should be considered as much as the potential side effects that ensue.
Prescription sleep medications can be habit forming and often do not treat the specific cause of the insomnia. The strength of prescription is commonly linked to morning drowsiness; whilst the creation of better sleeping habits may not necessarily form, as increasing reliance is put upon the prescribed dose.
What about OTC Medications?
Non-prescription alternatives also contain varying levels of antihistamine (sleep sedative found in prescription medication).
OTC sleep medications are recommended for transient or short-term insomnia and in conjunction with changes to your sleeping habits. Be sure to pay attention to your body’s physical response to them.
Should I use a Spray, Tablet or Capsule?
Tablets, gel capsules and throat sprays are the most common forms of administration for sleep medication, with varying degrees of success and speed of effect. Whilst there is much debate as to which provides the best all round cover, we consistently see the medical and practical benefits of direct application throat spray versus other forms of sleep medication;
- Liquid spray formulas are easily, conveniently and comfortably administered. Some adults find it uncomfortable to swallow sleeping pills with a drink at the same time. For seniors in particular this a huge benefit.
- Throat Spray active ingredients are ingested and assimilated immediately into the bloodstream for immediate effect. Pills are solids that require digestion & may take several hours to yield little effect.
- Spray absorption rates are considered to be higher than 90% (direct application of active ingredients results in near perfect ingestion) .The effectiveness of pills and capsules cannot be assured when combined with other materials in the stomach.
- Tablet/Capsule linings, coatings and coverings make the digestion process longer and reduce the potency of the sleep aid. There is simply more to break down and more filler to separate out.
